Craggus’ 2018 #Oscars Predictions (Including Live Updates Throughout The Ceremony)

The 2018 Academy Awards are less than an hour away, so here’s my picks for who’s going to win what. I’ll be updating it throughout the ceremony with the actual winners. So, let’s cross live to the red carpet as the stars come out in Hollywood…

Production Design
Craggus’ Prediction: The Shape of Water
Actual Winner: The Shape Of Water (Paul Denham Austerberry, Shane Vieau and Jeffrey A Melvin)

I think this is Deakins’ year, finally.
Craggus’ Prediction: Blade Runner 2049
Actual Winner: Blade Runner 2049 (Roger A Deakins)

Costume Design
Craggus’ Prediction: Beauty and the Beast
Actual Winner: Phantom Thread (Mark Bridges). I dunno, seems a bit like cheating to do a movie about a fashion designer and then win the Costume Design oscar? Only joking. Looking forward to seeing this movie, one I didn’t manage to catch yet.

Sound Editing
A tight group this one. I think Baby Driver should get it but I suspect Dunkirk will win.
Craggus’ Prediction: Dunkirk
Actual Winner: Dunkirk (Richard King and Alex Gibson)

Sound Mixing
I think Dunkirk will win this, although I’d like to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi nick it.
Craggus’ Prediction: Dunkirk
Actual Winner: Dunkirk (Gregg Landaker, Gary A Rizzo and Mark Weingarten)

Animated Short
Actual Winner: Dear Basketball (Glen Keane and Kobe Bryant)

Live-Action Short
Actual Winner: The Silent Child (Chris Overton and Rachel Shenton)

Original Score
I really want John Williams to get this, and Dunkirk or The Shape Of Water would be decent picks. I’ll let my heart rule my head this time.
Craggus’ Prediction: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Actual Winner: The Shape Of Water (Alexandre Desplat)

Visual Effects
This should absolutely go to War for the Planet of the Apes
Craggus’ Prediction: War For The Planet Of The Apes
Actual Winner: Blade Runner 2049 (John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Richard R Hoover)

Film Editing
I could see Baby Driver or Dunkirk winning this, but both films are a little too smug to root for. It’s a coin toss.
Craggus’ Prediction: Dunkirk
Actual Winner: Dunkirk (Lee Smith)

Makeup and Hairstyling
There’s no way this should go to anyone except Darkest Hour.
Craggus’ Prediction: Darkest Hour
Actual Winner: Darkest Hour (Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick)

Supporting Actress
Hard to see past Allison Janney for this category, although Laurie Metcalf could conceivably snatch it.
Craggus’ Prediction: Allison Janney
Actual Winner: Allison Janney

Supporting Actor
I’d be happy with any of the nominations winning this. I thought Dafoe would have it locked down for The Florida Project but then I saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Craggus’ Prediction: Sam Rockwell
Actual Winner: Sam Rockwell. Well deserved, a great performance and could it presage more success for Three Billboards tonight?

Foreign Language Film
Actual Winner: A Fantastic Woman. Pleased with that – it’s one of the two nominees I’m really keen to see, the other being The Square.

Documentary Short
Actual Winner: Heaven Is A Traffic Jam On The 405 (Frank Steifel)

Documentary Feature
Actual Winner: Icarus (Bryan Fogel and Dan Cogan)

Original Song
This should be one of the deadest certs of the night but the 2000 Oscars warns us that sometimes the Academy gets this one horribly wrong.
Craggus’ Prediction: This Is Me
Actual Winner: Remember Me (Coco). This is the worst Original Song result since Phil fucking Collins beat out South Park’s “Blame Canada” and Toy Story 2’s “When She Loved Me” in 2000.

Animated Feature
There is no way The Boss Baby or Ferdinand should be anywhere near this list, and the absence of Captain Underpants is the biggest snub of the night.
Craggus’ Prediction: Coco
Actual Winner: Coco

Adapted Screenplay
I’d love it to be Logan and I think it should be Molly’s Game but it won’t be.
Craggus’ Prediction: Call Me By Your Name
Actual Winner: Call Me By Your Name (James Ivory)

Original Screenplay
Another group of death. Every nominee a worthy winner.
Craggus’ Prediction: Get Out
Actual Winner: Get Out (Jordan Peele)

Lead Actor
There’s definitely one nominee I don’t want to win this, but I won’t say who unless he does.
Craggus’ Prediction: Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Actual Winner: Gary Oldman

Lead Actress
Again, I’d love it to go to Sally Hawkins but I don’t think it’s going to.
Craggus’ Prediction: Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Actual Winner: Frances McDormand

Does Christopher Nolan deserve an Oscar? Yes. For Dunkirk? No. But then that didn’t stop Leo and The Revenant
Craggus’ Prediction: Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Actual Winner: Guillermo del Toro

Best Picture
I’d love to see Get Out grab this one in a surprise upset, but I’m backing del Toro to do the double as the Academy looks to avoid the more contentious movies. Just consider that: icthyophilia is the less contentious subject matter.
Craggus’ Prediction: The Shape of Water
Actual Winner: The Shape Of Water

So I managed a 79% hit rate. Not too shabby when you consider I deliberately threw away a couple by predicting what I wanted to win rather than what I thought would win. I’ll make sure not to repeat that mistake next year!
