Hoot hoot! I’m back, undusted, after “Avengers: Infinity War” and ready to celebrate my own 10th milestone. Take to the wing with me now as I cast my owlish gaze over the most recent tasty morsels to scurry through the Youtube underbrush.
Ant-Man And The Wasp (UK Release Date: 3 August 2018 😡)
So we’ll be getting it later than virtually the whole world thanks, apparently, to the World Cup but everything points to it being worth the wait as Marvel cunningly get themselves of the hook of ever-escalating box office pressure by scheduling a ‘small’ movie to immediately follow their biggest. Questions still remain about exactly where and when this movie will be set and how, if at all, it will acknowledge the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” but it looks, much like the first one, to be a whole barrel of fun, really playing with the scale of things in a rip-roaring adventure. If nothing else, the ending of “Infinity War” heightens the anticipation for “Ant-Man And The Wasp” and, as Doctor Strange says, “We’re in the end game now”. Who would bet against the MCU now?
Robin Hood (UK Release Date: 23 November 2018)
More Renaissance Fair Green Arrow than Robin of Locksley, this latest reimagining of “Robin Hood” feels like nothing so much as a continuation and expansion of the “King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword” British Mythological Cinematic Universe. It looks like fantastically dumb popcorn fun as Oliver Queen Robin does the dual identity thing: lazy toff by day, hooded vigilante by night with brash aplomb. Taron Eggerton proved in “Kingsman: The Secret Service” that he has the chops to pull off the sardonic action man role and with a supporting cast boasting the likes of Jamie Foxx (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Star Wars: Rogue One“), Tim Minchin, and Jamie Dornan (er… “Fifty Shades Freed“) this should comfortably become at the very least a guilty pleasure, sartorial anachronisms notwithstanding.
Until next week, owl be seeing you!
