Super-Movie Secret Wars Group Stage Round-Up

As the dust settles on the Group Stages, sixty-four movies remain standing as surely as if Thanos had snapped his fingers. Some sailed through to the second round while some made it through by the skin of their teeth. There were tears and tie-breakers as some big hitters fell by the wayside.

A billion dollars at the Box Office didn’t help “Aquaman” make it past the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” and “Deadpool 2” while there was further bad news for the DCEU, and Zack Snyder fans in particular as none of his DCEU entries made it through the group stages, although Watchmen continued on into the second round. “Justice League” going out isn’t perhaps that surprising but bothMan Of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” falling at the first hurdle was unexpected, leaving “Wonder Woman” and “Shazam!” to fly the DCEU flag. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for DC though and while Superman had a mixed set of results, the Dark Knight saw many of his movies make it through, from ’66 through to two of the Nolan movies, although “The Dark Knight Rises” ended up not living up to its name.

It was a better result for the MCU, of course, but that just means they’ll be facing many more civil wars in the second round but perhaps the real twist of the round was that none of M Night Shyamalan’s genre-subverting trilogy made it past the real flights & tights brigade. Other big shock eliminations: “X-Men 2”, “Spider-Man” and “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” while recency bias did nothing to help the newly minted “Hellboy“.

So, with mere hours before the second round knock-out stage begins, doff your cowl, light your bat-signals and pour out a fifth for the fallen heroes:
